Not sure why Suspend to Disk would not work, try removing 'quiet' from
the kernel menu in /boot/grub/menu.lst so you can see more messages on
the screen, perhaps there's some module that it can't unload?
Also, some nVidia cards behave differently, which one do you have?

For the Inspiron 1420, make sure you install linux-backports-
modules-2.6.22-14-generic, not linux-backports-modules-generic. These 2
are different:

In fact, you don't need backports on the Inspiron 1420, you should get

This deb worked for me. I installed it and ran 'dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg', started gdm, and I got the native resolution 1280 x 800,
which I had not been able to get before.
