I don't know if Intrepid / kernel 2.6.27 was supposed to correct this bug, but
it didn't work for me.
However I did follow the steps on

After removing Firefox, also Konqueror stopped responding at its
startup. (No problems before)
Then, after reinstalling Firefox, this problem seemed to be solved: both
Konqueror and Firefox start normally.
But, I still have total system hangs now and then. Last time this even
happened at the kdm
even when I install the xfonts-75dpi and xfonts-100dpi I do not get
these fonts.

On another note, in my case xscreensaver seems to be requesting the
"dina"-fonts. I get the error messages like:

update: after a reboot, -adobe-helvetica-... fonts are indeed present.
next, changing the fontname "dina" in ~/.Xdefaults into "helvetica"
resolves the above issue with Xscreensaver.

today (version A07) and still have the issue. If I leave the devices
plugged in at boot, the system will not respond to anything at the

By installing kernels using .deb packages I have learned that the issue
is resolved between kernel 3.13.2 and 3.13.3. I will now try to reverse
bisect the commits in between these kernel version (which I have never
done before).

Either I was mistaken, the bug has been fixed, or a restart of rhythmbox
made the difference: a last.fm entry has appeard on the side pane, where
I can enter my credentials.
If a restart was indeed necessary I'd like to remark that this is
counterintuitive / should not be necessary in my opinion.
