I can confirm a similar behaviour, actually like that of komputes: I started with Ubuntu 8.04.1, and later installed kubuntu-desktop. It worked fine until upgrading to 8.10: network applet disappeared from my tray and knetworkmanager appeared instead (always in a gnome session). -- Ubuntu Intrepi
