I booted Oneiric with the live cd & tried to perform a copy from the camera again. In the attached screenshots you can see gvfsd loading painfully slowly the entire ~1Gb file in memory & stalling nautilus while it does so. Once the file is cached the copy continues to the attached usb flashkey.

The problem appears when I try to copy video files, they are all >1gb, from the camera while connected with the USB cable. It is probably linked to the camera as the copy fails on every system I have tried it, including windows XP. On the other hand copying the photo files works fine on all syste
