This problem now appears to have been solved by going to hplipopensource .com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html and re-installing hplip ver. 3.9.12 In all likelihood I did not do a good job of the original download/install. Thank you Mitch Towner and Launchpad John Spicer
