I tried installing both drivers presented by jockey. Neither seemed to
work. I don't know which one. Afterwards jockey still presents the STA
driver as available to install (I didn't do so), so I guess it was the
driver with the number. Sorry that I don't remember its name.

I assume you are getting the message "Boot Error", and nothing else,
when you try to boot from the usb stick after you have used usb-creator
to format and copy the kubuntu image.
What model computer is being problematic? What BIOS does it use?

Changing the System->Preference->Appearance theme from ambiance to
anything else eliminates the problem as the cpufreq applet seems to use
the window text color which seems to be rather dark. Other applets are
not drawing their text with the same color.
