Found a workaround for this bug - not an elegant solution, but will get
things going on both the live disk and the install . Mess with Grub!
I used the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

This happens on the live CD when I want to try out Ubuntu gnome. Never makes it
to a working desktop.

The fix would be that installer correctly recognizes the screen
resolution. 1024x768 would certainly be be better that 640x480 as you
could actually use the virtual installation.

Had the same problem when running live desktop. Was able to bring up
working terminal (Alt F2). Internet connection working okay.
