I think the solution for the icons is put generic icons, for example, a

In Unity2D it's super fast. It's possible to mix Unity2D and Compiz, to make a
better Unity, light for slow computers (it will turn off effects) and faster
for new computers (if hardware supports, will turn on effects)
And the Dash has better speed and beauty.

Sorry, I mixed 2 different bugs, one is that the battery isn't displayed
until disconnects AC if the system boots with AC.
And this bug, it's that the "power cog" disappear after using unity a time.

I think that on the Launcher isn't a good place, maybe it's the faster, but
a user can delete it.
I think the best way, it's a big (?) Monochrome/glow icon on the Home Dash,
at the top right of the dash, just at the right of the search bar.

I've got the same bug, but... my webcam only supports 640x480, and,
unfortunately, I have the same strange colors that you have on
1280x1024.

No, in unity there's no gnome-panel
It uses another panel on the unity extension for Compiz 0.9
