I had to do this in nautilus by going to Edit > Preferences > Media
where I selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion.".
But it should work when the individual options. If it doesn't work for
Music Player you might try to see what's under the Other Media type drop
down menu.

I confirm this behavior. I use the speakers from my screen and the
settings work fine in XP and have worked fine when using 7.10, but since
my upgrade to 8.04 I have to turn the music within Gnome all the way up
if I want to have some sound when listening to music or watching a
video.

The symlink was needed in previous versions to make the package web-
accessible. This is no longer needed because the package is configured
directly from within the web server. So surfing to
http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ should work and removing the symlink is
advised security wise.
