I'm having the same problem in Xubuntu Lucid AMD64. nm-tool shows
connected to wireless. Hovering over applet shows connected. However,
the applet icon shows as disconnected.

Strangely, a couple times I've had the icon suddenly start displaying
correctly after having been connected for sometime. Once it was within
about 10 minutes of having connected and once a couple hours after. I
didn't purposefully do anything to make it start working and I don't
