Try removing "splash" from your kernel command line in grub (hit esc then "e"
to edit before boot). I did this and it fixed my issue reported here:

ifconfig shows no device.

I have a Dell XPS 1330 using Kubuntu 8.10 and KDE 4.1.3 -- this system
has (had) extremely low volume input.
When PulseAudio is installed (and actually running - the default
/etc/init.d/pulseaudio startup script fails to do anything and just exits) KMix
presents two input sources Digital and Ana

I can confirm exactly this on my system as follows, the commonality
seems to be the graphics driver and card.
This happened after a post Intrepid (stable) install update to my
system, which is running Kubuntu 8.10 / KDE 4.1.3, the base install of

Setting the Master Channel to "Front" now works for me, previously it
had the adjust PCM behaviour documented previously.
The volume keys now work and Mute sets the OSD to 0%.
BTW, finding "Select Master Channel..." is a pain, it doesn't appear in

This is happening with my Dell M1330 as well. After resume the disk
spins down regularly and then sounds like it is parking. It then spins
up after about a 1-2 second wait. This has only happened since Jaunty,
intrepid was fine.
i read the man page for hdparm:
-S Set the standby (spindown) ti

Upgrading to A12 via the Dell instructions really quietened things down
for me. Nvidia 177 in use, previous bios A10.
Remember to run those command Dell supplies as sudo.
The only thing that was a problem in the BIOS update was a screen
getting rainbow lines in it for about 10 seconds.

I can confirm i have this issue too.
The machine this happens on has been upgraded since dapper or edgy... Maybe
something got left behind? In any case it shouldn't freeze anyways.

and the gist of my comments from upstream:
Nvidia and ATI both have algorithms that clock down the GPU when it is not in
use. Since compiz effects require significantly more GPU power, the GPU will
be clocked up for processing the 3D effects compiz requires. Higher clock
cycle = higher voltage
This issue has been fixed with Hardy, this bug can now be closed.

Adding the PPA to use 2.6 under Hardy, this does seem to be fixed.
However under "File->Save As", you can clearly see that ODT is nowhere
near the top. I'm not criticizing AbiWord, as I love it and tend to use
RTF for the most part. I'm just saying for ODT creation and editing it
seems to make mo
