Stuck at "Saving installed packages..." when using a custom /var

My /var is not custom, my old install uses two partitions - "/" and
swap. The new install adds an extra partition for /home. Didn't want to
format "/" to save time after the install. Out of luck I guess.

an external usb, 2.5" HDD, which used to work without problems with
11.04.
right click on the icon (or choose eject from gnome 3) causes kernel
panic and the system freezes.
