Same here using a Dell Latitude E6400 with an nvidia quadro 160M and an Intel
WiFi 5100.
Bug always happen under heavy use of WPA wifi network.

Run memory test and all seems fine too.

Sorry, I tried using the other dvd reader device on the same computer and all
goes fine, no problem at all !!
So I think that I have some error with my first dvd reader.
This is dmesg info of the "BAD" reader:

Vendor: ATA Model: SAMSUNG SP1213C Rev: SV10
Type: Direct-A
No problem, just need some free time today and I will reinstall on another
partition using SAMSUNG.
Great if other people with the same hardware can confirm-unconfirm this bug.

Repeat the process but I haven't any file in /var/log/installer/syslog.
The only syslog file that I have is /var/log/syslog (attached).
But this time the 'traceback' application do not appear, install is
stoped indefinitely on 77%.
More ideas?

è, é... or diacritical marks like ï, ô.

If that solves the problem then it will confirm that for some reason the
default session in gdm is not calling startxfce4, as I said before.

Same problem here on a clean xubuntu daily install (Xubuntu 8.04 and
xfce4-utils 4.4.2-4ubuntu1).
In my system, the screensaver doesn't start because startxfce4 are never
called by default gdm session so /etc/xdg/xfce/xinitrc are not processed
at all. You need to explicitly select Xfce Session in
