Confirmed that eliminating TKIP from the access point config cured the
problem, now just using WPA2/AES. Fortunately I have control over the
access point. Also fortunately my Debian machine set up using TKIP

I had another OS installed, and have had 17.10 installed for a number of years
without issues - which was an upgrade from maybe 16.04.
I have now tried 3 times to install 20.04 as a clean install over 17.10, and
both those attempts resulted in the system rebooting into grub
So, is this going to be updated, or will I have to fix it myself? It's
not really clear from the discussion.

I've experienced this as well.
Using kmix, I was able to enable the capture device. I was unable to
enable it using either gnome-volume-settings or alsamixer. The device
stays enabled after kmix exits.
