This is probably a bug in the pango library (see Gnumeric upstream bug).
At the moment it is not clear what the bug in pango is, but the upstream bug
has a workaround for it:

This bug is not present in Intrepid because Intrepid does not build a
real libgoffice-gtk package, merely a transitional package to redirect
to the libgoffice package.

When you install gnumeric from Applications - Add/Remove Software with
app-install, the documentation package gnumeric-doc is not installed
automatically. When you install this documentation package with Synaptic
Package Manager or some other way, the help files (manual) will be found
from the gnum
This bug is caused by running a gnumeric that was build with the option
--without-gnome (package gnumeric-gtk) in combination with a libgoffice that
was build without this option (package libgoffice).
If you replace the package libgoffice by the package libgoffice-gtk, gnumeric
will not crash, j

The functionality for opening external files is not (yet?) implemented in
Gnumeric (see TODO warning in gnumeric/src/hlink.c:
gnm_hlink_external_activate).
It would be nice though if Gnumeric provided the user with some feedback about
this missing functionality.
