When trying to safely remove Maxtor Basics 500 GB USB hard drive by
selecting "Safely remove drive" from it's desktop icon's right click
menu an error message is shown:

Just want to add that the same "Safely remove drive" option works just
fine for Kingston 4 GB USB memory stick and Verbatim 1 GB USB memory
stick and gives no errors with them.

After browsing some forums it seems that 12.04 also breaks Nokia CS-17
and perhaps many others.

During the boot only black screen is shown (not even the back light is
on). I can still hear the login sound so it's only the screen that is

After a bit more investigation, it seems that it's the whole titlebar
that does not refresh, not only the buttons. So if I switch tabs in
FireFox the title does not update.
Also at random the titlebar of a window might suddenly start working

My workaround was to first install Ubuntu 11.04, install the proprietary driver
and then upgrade to 11.10.
This way 11.10 never needs to be booted without the working driver.

Just tested OpenSUSE 11.3 and it does not have this bug.
Since Fedora 14 does not have this bug either it seems that this is Ubuntu only
bug.
This is weird since both Fedora 14 and OpenSUSE 11.3 use kernel newer than
2.6.32 which is the last that works with Ubuntu.

I can confirm this bug.
I have GeForce 8600m GT on Acer ASPIRE 5920G laptop and have the
identical problem. (low resolution with nouveau, black screen with
nvidia-173 and only command line with nvidia-current (260)).
The same laptop with the same card works perfectly with Lucid using
nvidia-curre

I just tested this with Maverick (10.10) beta and the bug is still
present.
When selecting "Safely Remove Drive" for the Maxtor drive I get a dialog
with an error message:
Error Detaching: helper exited with exit code 1: Detaching device /dev/sdb
USB device: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/u

I don't know about Lucid, but it is still present with the Karmic.
I want add that this only happens with the Maxtor drive. I also have 1TB
Iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive and it works just fine.
