I have this problem too ... and I have yet to determine the cause ... I
usually find out when I try to play sound or flash with VLC ... so I
know it is not caused by another application all of the time.
My solution ... which actually kills firefox is to run ...
lsof

I am running Feisty on a HP Pavillion dv6000.
I have not tried your workarounds as they indicate wifi is broken with a
fix that uses a program for Acer hot keys and I thought I best not risk
it.

Actually I take back ... while suspend did work the first time ... via
a left click on the power icon in the top right ... it no longer works
via that method of via closing the laptop lid. I will try replacing

I have tried all of these suggestions and the ones in the bug below with
no luck ... I also posted some output file in the bug below ...

Ok I have tried everything described above and suspend still does not
work ...
However setting /etc/acpi/resume.d/15-video-post.sh: as described above
changed from have a black screen with a small square of squiggly line to
just a black screen.
