I also have the identical problem with an older HP 8510w laptop running
Ubuntu Desktop 9.10. Suspend or hibernate will lock the system up
completely.

Same problem in the wmii window manager. So it's not Compiz per se, but
could be compositing in Xorg since I do have that enabled for times when
I do log in with Gnome/Metacity or Emerald.

laptop the other day but did not log in. The system was left at the GDM
login screen. I needed to disconnect it from wall power and the network
