After a recent update to the latest network-manager-pptp-gnome package the same
bug applies.
I was already updated to precise, the problems seems to have been caused by a
recent change on the package.

Sorry, my mistake. I had messed with the configuration of dnsmasq and
for some reason the NM menu did render correctly.

If you enable the "KDE Compatibility" under CompizConfig Settings
Manager then the indicator displays and behaves correctly.
