It seems that changing one IDE cable out so that now both cables have 80
wires fixes this problem for me. I will do some more testing in the
next couple of days and reopen if necessary.

I have the same identical wireless card and had the same issue in Gutsy,
and it seems to me that this is no longer an issue in Intrepid. Looks
like the kernel developers did some good work.

It turns out, I can still reproduce this bug by reading from the hard
drive and the CD-ROM at the same time. I have taken further pictures of
kernel output, each of which seem to look a little different. Would

I have to confess, I don't even know what all_generic_ide is supposed to
do, I just ran across it while searching the internet and thought I
would give it a try.
I am tempted to try blacklisting the ata drivers, although I don't have
enough time at the moment to do a full install, just to find out

On boots when sound works fine, I can access my soundcard simply by issuing:
$ alsamixer
However, on boots where sound does not work properly, this command accesses not
my soundcard, but rather my TV tuner:
Card: SAA7134
In order to access my soundcard on such boots, I have to issue:
$ alsamixe
I also seem to be having this problem on Xubuntu Edgy. However, I do not
get reliable sound when booting from a cold start. On some cold boots it
works, sometimes it does not. However, restarting does seem to
consistently prevent sound from playing with mplayer.
The strange thing is, I have sound

I have to correct myself: restarting does not consistently break sound.
It is hit and miss, whether I reboot or cold start.
(Although, I have to admit that I have installed recommended updates
since my last post, and it could be that the problem is less severe
now.)

Those three screenshots were taken with the latest kernel available for
Karmic, that is with 2.6.31-20-generic.
I was also able to produce a system crash by reading from the DVD-ROM
and the hard drive at the same time, but that experiment did not produce
any output on screen.

mentioned above, but none of them really "worked". But I do not seem to
be experiencing this issue when I switched to using DVI instead of HDMI.

I have installed the magnatune extension ( banshee-extension-magnatune
). Now I have a Magnatune option in the menu. This lets me pick from a
list of genres. If I pick one, then one song is played, and then
playback is stop
I now also tested these kernels on a 32-bit install, and found no
wireless interfaces at all.
