This happens to me, too. Rendering Open Office effectively useless for a
production environment.
Steps to reproduce bug:
Open a *.doc file.
Click: Format --> Paragraph.
Wait forever.
Force Quit.
Try again.
Install AbiWord as a workaround.

I can confirm this on jaunty. It's trivial to reproduce. Just mute and
reboot and notice that volume is still muted, but at level 0. Not sure
