I have the same problem.
My motherboard is a P5QL-EM.
I have a NVIDIA 9600 graphics card.
Kubuntu 8.1 with
Kernel 2.6.27-7
Alsa 1.0.17a
The following is part of the /bin/dmesg log file retrieved with

I have installed ALSA v1.0.18 according to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
I did not observe any problems during compilation and install, however the
problem remains.
The log has changed to:
2008-11-06 20:14:28 Sorina kernel [ 11.485661] nvidia: module license
'NVIDI
I found a workaround in the Fedora forums :

Translated into ubuntu the solution becomes:
Add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
It works for me!
