Assuming this doesn't affect it, there is that giant red banner when run
as root, warning the user, so it's probably ok :)

Pardon my ignorance but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do with
this file. I assume it's meant to be distributed and installed, but...
- Where does it need to be installed to relative to $prefix?
- Does it need to be processed by configure script replace hardcoded binary
path and gettext

I build the 4.11.6 tag from Git and after running, here is the debug
output. I changed the directory from the original to another one and
then back to the original.

I'm having this too. Running xfdesktop-settings from the command line
doesn't show any output, but I have not yet tried compiling from source
to turn on --enable-debug. I have the same distro/versions as OP.

Same result using 4.11.8git-075f69f. I also tried to use -R to reload
xfdesktop with no effect. I can change the settings OK through the
Settings Editor GUI.
