It was never resolved, to my knowledge under Karmic, but since I upgraded to
Lucid, I have been able to hibernate and resume with no problems.

Screen goes blank but remains powered. It then hangs from there. I let
it sit overnight to make sure it was just not taking a long time to
hibernate.
