It seems that xinitrc was fine, but simply not being run when my session
started. Logging out, explicitly setting my session type to Xfce in the
gdm screen, and logging in again got things working.

icon that lives near the clock on my xfce panel. Now that you mention

I just noticed that Andale Mono, part of the msttcorefonts package,
shares this problem. It's as if the bytecode hinter (not the auto-
hinter) gets disabled for bold text.

I have this problem with a fresh install of Intrepid.
Perhaps more troubling, nm-applet did not make it clear that the
passphrase it accepted is not treated like an ASCII WEP key. Instead it
happily accepted my ASCII key, waited for a longish time, and eventually
came back and asked me for my key
