Yes, this issue is mixed, people talking about those two problem.
The original poster states one of the problem, though: "While copying
many and large files to and from a USB drive, the system becomes
incredibly slow and sometimes hangs.", which is illustrated by Mauro

external HDD I have), the desktop becomes unusable, because it goes very very
unresponsive.

the problem wasn't inherently there.
After that, I updated the machine again (now it brought a new kernel

So, at some point I updated the system, and this behaviour stopped
happening; tried a lot to reproduce it, and all that I got is the normal
slowdown when you use disk a lot and try to use an app that suddenly
needs to access disks.

I'm sorry to inform that after more heavy using, this is still happening
in the new kernel, but less frequently :/

$ dconf read /desktop/unity/panel/systray-whitelist
['all']
...I see the icon for Deluge, but not for Pidgin, nor XChat, nor
Turpial.
I should see them all.
Is there a way to debug this more than "I see it I don't see it"?
