This seems to be the relevant bit, as I said first I tried (once only)
brightness up, then brightness down (again one keypress only). And as
I've said before it works fine during bootsplash, seems to stop once
X/KDE are up and running. Very odd.

Ok I've actually encountered this error with GMail too. Exact same
circumstances, I've set GMail to IMAP and when I reply, if the name has
a é in it ti splits the address in the exact same way. I'd be liable to
think this is definitely something wrong with Kontact/Kmail.

Ok something odd is happening, I rebooted into the 17 kernel to see if
wireless died again, it did, so I thought problem solved by the 18
kernel. No... I've jsut rebooted into 18 and I'm back to the RF-
Killswitch nonsense, I really don't know how it started working
yesterday! Any ideas?

vmlinuz-2.6.31-18 and it's functioning correctly. Problem is I'm not

it's beyond me why. I had Network Manager open, the "Enable Wireless"
checkbox is disabled as it believes there is no Wifi card. I also open

Just an update on past few kernel updates, none have fixed the issue,
I've even tried the Karmic backport wireless modules to no avail.

Should mention it turns up fine in dmesg, iwconfig also shows it as
there but not associated. Network Manager doesn't even show it though.
I've attached dmesg output, I later after boot switch the kill switch on
and off in case any interesting info could be gleaned.

This still effects the machine so I'm setting it back to what it was
before... I've not been able to adjust any volume levels etc. Only

This is effecting me as well. I've the same SB700/800 chipset but with 2
1TB Hitachi drives (I don't have the model to hand). They don't cause
the issue all the time. Running an apt update/upgrade caused it
momentarily but logging into KDE causes it to almost block the drive for
good minute.

alsamixer to make sure it wasn't a hidden one. Muting the master doesn't
even effect it. I grepped for all kernel modules with snd and put them
all into the black list file. that stopped it loading the driver and

Just to note I can't get a network connection at all. Apologies for
these appearing in multiple messages, it was apport that did it I'm
afraid.

Hey Chris,
Unfortunatly I've tried that and it doesn't seem to work at all. The
whole activating of the wireless is a little odd in fact it doesn't seem
to have an effect sometimes. dmesg doesn't report much either.
/var/log/syslog does give NetworkManager errors and timeouts though.

Argh unbelievable, it must have been timing issue, I just retried
activating the card at slightly later stage in the boot splash and it's
worked! Is there anything I can re-add to this to help narrow down
getting it activated without having to hit the power on during boot?

Ah I've found out what actually activated it for me. I had installed
linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic
whilst testing. I've uninstalled it and again wireless just doesn't
work. Reinstall and it does, so I'm 99.99% sure that's the cause for me.

It doesn't appear to be, although I've only done fresh installs for the
last couple of rebuilds. This was on an older machine which has since
been rebuilt with a fresh install of Lucid and the problem did not
occur.

Unfortunately that doesn't help. Should add that plugging in headphones
creates an even louder buzz from the right speaker.
Anything else I can try?

When the system boots all is well till just prior to GDM login screen
starts. Just before that (oerhaps when audio daemon starts) a audible
hiss comes from the front right speaker. I've attempted to use the
modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and change the card type to all
