Thanks for your interest. There is another bug with a similar problem
and would like you to take a look at the bug and see if you are having
the same problem to determine if this is a duplicate. Specifically

I am thinking that Empathy logs off because of a network interruption
rather than a specified time. While other programs reconnect Empathy
has a problem reestablish connection and crashes.

Try and update the software for Ubuntu and Empathy both of these
versions have been updated since you tried this and the bugs might have
been fixed. If it still doesn't work let me know and I can start
processing this bug.
