I've tried to apply the second patch into the source tree, but complains
that can't find the files, and ask me to input the file location:

Yes, that's the problem. Liferea uses network-manager to view the
connection, so if you don't have network-manager working properly, you
won't have liferea working properly :)
To solve the problem, solve the network-manager one ;)

I think It would work without n-m. Why? Because it would work as if now
you press the connection button. What does that is tell liferea not to
check the connection, so liferea always tries to download new feeds.

If you have installed the drivers from the nVidia website, you should
send a bug report to them, as Ubuntu can't do nothing with it.
Also, if you want, you can install the nVidia drivers from the Ubuntu
repositories (they are the same ones, but supported by Ubuntu, because
have some chan
