The pink shadows on menus are gone now. Must have been one of the
updates since that removed them.
They were replaced by a golden orange glow/shadow around top-level
application windows.
Disturbingly, this glow also comes and goes with no discernible pattern.
This is with "Visual Effects" set to

I just checked the current control center (1:2.18.0-0ubuntu1) in feisty
and the bug is fixed/gone.
Probably due to some changes in libslab which provides the widget in
question.
It's a little puzzling why it appeared in the first place because I

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
The "Group" selection buttons in gnome-control-center render with little
jagged edges, as if hinting was turned off for them. The rest of the
control centre uses the desktop wide hinting (I haven't changed it from
the install default)
It's not on the "Group" label, but on the buttons in that section. From
a quick glance at the code they appear to be a composite widget called a
'tile'.

Here is a screenshot. I used the screen magnifier to get a closeup of
the problem. The mouse cursor was above the "System" button making it
highlighted and raised.
If you look at the letter 'e' in "System" and "Other" you can see that
one has darker hinted pixels than the other (due to the differe
Well, it may be regarded as a low priority visual bug. I only reported
it because it is rather jarring.
The fonts are "correct" but because the hinting interacts with the
darker background it essentially looks like a monochrome (black and
background) font instead of having the gradations of grey
