On a new install of 10.04 on a USB, I'm getting a failure to install
packages. Have tried via cmd line and synaptics GUI. Tried on two
different installs...same results.

I'm having the same issue - installing broadcom driver or nvidia
driver
Two separate (and very fresh) 10.04 USB installs are giving the same
results. pkgs won't install.
here's the output:

I think this is caused by the link to vmlinuz which, in a USB install,
is a broken link. See bug #557023.
I fixed this by recreating the link as follows:
sudo rm /vmlinuz
sudo ln -s /cdrom/casper/vmlinuz vmlinuz
Then the installs were fine.

Check bug 557023. The cause of this may be a broken link to vmlinuz on
persistent USB installs.
