More information. Today I reverted to a different mainline kernel to
test a different bug and the scale problem is back. I'm using
3.2.7-030207-generic.
It looks like this bug is due to the 3.0 and 3.2 series of kernels as it
works fine in 3.3.0 and 2.6.*

I'm afraid I don't have good news. 3.2.7 crashed as well. Looks like
it's a regression in 3.2.*.
For what it's worth - bug #912834 was automatically fixed when I
upgraded to 3.3 as well so it seems that's also a 3.2.* regression.

If I use the keyboard shortcut to move a window (terminal for example)
to another workspace - so Ctrl+Alt+Shift-arrow I can get something to
mess up.
When I just did it and it snapped my terminal to the top of the screen,
I hit alt and escaped the HUD out of the way and the window remained
snapped
This is too old to bother with.

Yes, I can confirm that the alt-tab switcher is still slow on my system
with the latest precise updates. It's much faster on my intel based
laptop.
It is better than it was, but you still hit tab and wait for it to
switch to the next item.

@ Doug (mc3man) I don't follow. I don't use ccsm, tilda, or others.. I
only use the keyboard shortcuts in system settings. I have one precise
machine in which Ctrl-arrow switches workspaces just fine and one that
does not. It stopped working when this bug was introduced.

Ah! This is exactly what happens in keyboard preferences in system
settings then. The reason why my other precise machine works is I didn't
set those preferences while this bug was in place.
For example, I have CTRL-arrow set to switch workspaces. Right now I can
switch workspaces with just arrow
I've been running 3.3.0-030300rc2-generic for a week and USB has not
failed once.

latest precise kernel to crash (3.2.0-17-generic) and warm booting I was
able to crash 3.3.*.

I've disabled a bunch of things trying to pin point how/when the box
appears. I concur that it appears to be with the browser. That being
said, I haven't noticed any browser breakage when it appears but I
suppose it's possible.

Based on what I've seen, I think it's a pulseaudio problem. I can
sometimes boot and mumble will work perfectly. After a short amount of
time, it refuses to recognize that I have a microphone and any other app
trying to use the microphone (such as Skype or jitsi) is distorted - as
if the input gain
Unfortunately guest session still doesn't work when using the lightdm
from proposed. I get a black screen with cursor when I try a guest
session. The following errors are reported in dmesg/syslog:

Actually I take that back. After installing the unity update, using the

Just to provide more information - my initial report was incorrect. I
did in fact see the tearing on the laptop display. It seems whenever
you're using non-integer scaling with Xorg, that's what happens.
