the neither the file browser nor the parent windows are closable by any
normal means and I have to resort to killing the process.

and my testing, empathy does not support video chat with Yahoo. Video
chat should work with Gtalk

Hello. Could you please attach a log of the ibus daemon while having the
problem? To obtain a log first run 'killall ibus-daemon' in a terminal
to stop the running ibus and then run 'ibus-daemon -xvr > ibus-log.txt
2>&1' . This should log all output from the ibus daemon to ibus-log.txt.
