I have the same Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset on my Gateway
NV78 laptop. Had to perform a kernel downgrade to 2.6.35-28 to get
things working. I'm guessing I've got the same issue.

Tested on my gateway NV-78 laptop (Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)) on kernel 2.6.35,
2.6.38, and 2.6.39
In all instances FF gives me backlight off, and 00 gives me max
brightness.
