that you're not sourcing it. Please read the docs on how to enable it,
most notably sourcing it from ~/.bashrc (or similar startup files).

This is totally unrelated with the .desktop file, as already discussed
with upstream. The perl code uses:
open(my $F, ">", "path");
instead of the more correct:
open(my $F, ">:encoding(UTF-8"; "path");
This should hopefully be fixed in the next release.

That revision really fixes it in a more general way: without "=", spaces
or newlines, you can't do much harm. Sure, you can write arbitrary
values in the config file, but still nothing that would get executed.

it would've been much more useful if you attached your wicd.log to the
bugreport; instead of writing an essay.
The "bad password" message might be misleading, but it means that
wpa_supplicant failed. You should have a line like "connect result is
failed" in your log to testify that.

would you please mind sending a log after enabling debug mode? You can
do it via the GUI, or edit /etc/wicd/manager-settings.conf and change
debug_mode to 1.

see, when the connection succeeds you have "WPA_CLI RESULT IS
COMPLETED", while you don't have that in all other cases.
