Bobemoe, I also wrote the laptop off. It's too bad because the reason I was doing this in the first place was to give to one of my dad's employees so he could play online poker and surf the net (I had long since stopped using it). Now he has to find one elsewhere and I don't have a backup laptop

Gah, sorry about the multiposting, but I thought it might be helpful to mention that like someone else, the two times I actually managed to boot before the error, Ubuntu did not seem to recognize any resolution for my monitor higher than 800x600 and could do nothing with my wifi card either. -- Y
