After a failed update attempt late last night, the graphics were once
again working properly. The keyboard/mouse then quit working so I
couldn't investigate further (couldnt get to virtual terminal).
Rebooted today to terminal and started gdm. Keyboard and mouse started
working again but graphics

It's driver specific. I am still getting a jumbled screen even when
booting to command line (no X.Org running). I'm taking a guess that
when my update crashed out that X.Org reverted back to a default driver
and that is why I had a "fixed" screen until I reconfigured packages.

then immediately back into the screensaver program. Upon entering

Same as wolfger, I just did an update on a fresh install and bug
persists. Let me know if any other information is needed / work-arounds
need to be tested.

Having ran the classic desktop for 24+ hours now, I am not noticing any
unusual memory usage from Compiz. It hovers around 15mb. I am also
using proprietary Nvidia drivers on this computer.
