Still occurs on my fresh (32bit) Ubuntu 12.04 install, Nautilus 3.4.2.
Are there any workarounds or fixes for users doing a lot of copy work
(like me), not involving the terminal ?

On my computer the bug does not occur anymore after deinstalling
VirtualBox in Software Center, and installing via Terminal:
