the VPN menu items (using OpenVPN) are gone. I can launch the VPN by

I just tried a backup and restore, encrypting the backup. Failed again
on the restore, in exactly the same way as far as I can tell.
At this point I simply use Grsync to run a complete backup to an
encrypted drive. It works well enough.

1. Turned off Wake on LAN in BIOS settings.
2. Installed latest Intel graphics drivers from:

I've suspended/resumed a few times since then with no problems.

Even with updated kernel in 13.04, the same issue I was having before is
still here, but more consistently occurring.
When I suspend, the machine does go into suspend mode, but then (almost
