As a data point, I also have the "Macintosh mouse button emulation"
recognised.
Does kernel 2.6.30-8 still use HAL? Perhaps the difference lies there.

I have the same issue; hp mini311-1000. The OS (Ubuntu 10.04.1, latest
kernel patches as of 2010.08.01) thinks my touchpad is a PS/2 mouse.
It's devilishly hard to type on it as a result.

By the bye, it seems as though the OS never loaded the Synaptics drivers
at all. No indication that they're present.
