Same issue for me. Tested on jaunty.
I'd guess it's a problem for a lot of workstations/desktops in
companies, which usually have internet-access only through a proxy and
an internal apt-mirror for ubuntu-updates.

According to the installation-guide-i386 of ubuntu 9.04 the needed
option is:
d-i user-setup/encrypt-home boolean false
AFAIK this does NOT work with ubuntu 8.10.
Also there is no default defined, so that you cannot completely preseed
an installation (fix releases for jaunty, see Bug #328281)

In Intrepid Beta (LiveCD) on an Acer Extensa 5520 it is not an issue any

After latest updates i still get these messages on the screen, they
appear ca. 15 seconds after grub-prompt. Grafix appear at about 7
seconds later, which means the screen is more or less black for about 27
seconds. The whole systems boots in about 1:05 minutes.

Same for me. I believe the problem lies in the wrong calculation of the
virtual desktop-size.
I got two 1280x1024-Monitors, and in xorg.conf the follwoing parameter is set:
"Virtual2048 2048"
It should be:
"Virtual 2560 2048"
If i change it manually, it works immediately.
