About half the disk space has been used (658GB) & about 3% of inodes are
used (`df -hi`) on the single partition /dev/sda1
The box is BIOS (not efi) so no EFI partition is used, so /boot is on
sda1

POSSIBLE CAUSE :
I booted into Ubuntu hirsute (sda1) system again..
it's `fstab` refers to
/sda1 for / referenced by UUID
/boot/efi which is referenced by UUID & comment reports it as /dev/sdb2
so did the system boot ONLY because I had a thumb-drive plugged in
during my pre QA-install tests ??

Further to comment #9 (with the idea of work-around) I initial-booted
the thumb-drive (installation media) but by editing the grub entry (so
instead of booting it normally; it booted the installed (sda1) system
instead using `chainloader (hd1)+1`)
and my installed version booted.

It fails to boot if ISO is written using mkusb CLONE OR LIVE modes.
(as noted earlier; applies to Xubuntu & Lubuntu too)
