Here is the output from journalctl (extra spacing around probably the
most interesting line). Also when I got back to the login screen, I very
briefly saw a message under the password form saying 'Authentication
error'.

If the file is open in the browser (eg html, pdf, txt) then I can save
that directly with no problem. (e.g. click one of the .txt files above
and then hit Ctrl-S.)
But if I right click "Save link as..." on the same file then it fails.
Same if it's a file that the browser can't display natively.

directory in your home directory:

My system has a built in WiFi card, and I've found that under
4.18.0-10-generic its detected and works with out issue out of the box.
However Under 4.18.0-12-generic the wifi card is not seen in the system
via the gui.
lspci still shows it there though.
