Just for the records: After a complete new install of feisty, I got a
similar behaviour. No more window frames, decorations of anything. No
possibility to change any window settings because of a message
concerning a window manager "unknown". Seems that Metacity died. I will
search for its corpse.

I can confirm this. Got the same annoyances after a failed dist-upgrade
from edgy to feisty yesterday. Use a gartoon theme, can not change theme
using gui.

Solved by adding forcepae to grub and grub-update. After that sudo apt-get
