Intrepid Alpha 6 as an upgrade, it continued to work fine until my next
restart, when ath5k was substituted. Much time spent trying to remove
ath5 with modprobe -r, but this would not work and I had to blacklist

bombed out so I installed Karmic over the top of a copy of a happy

I came upon this problem when using efax to view received faxes. Like
the original reporter of this bug, I was hamstrung by the confidential

~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf* and restarting the daemon. Running

Still a problem here (up to date with kernel 2.6.31-14) on one of two
installations. I wonder if it's anything to do with peculiarities of the
hardware, and in particular the problem occurs on a pretty fast box
(boots in under half a minute). Workaround was to rename
/etc/rc2.d/S20privoxy to /etc/r
Fresh install of 16.04 on hardware that ran 14.04 faultlessly. 14.04 has
sound, 16.04 not. The problem seems not to be at the driver level: the
same drivers (snd_hda_intel, snd_oxygen) are allocated to the same
hardware devices as seen whith lshw -C sound. In the sound settings, the

Grateful thanks to Valentin Crone for the workaround. I ran alsamixer in
the terminal, selected Analog Output by right-arrowing and then
Multichannel by up-arrowing, and now my sound works. I doubt whether
this would ever occur to the non-technical user! It deserves to be more
widely known.
