Richard, you're using a different video driver from charlie so most likely are
having an unrelated bug.

Regarding your question for workarounds, if you're using gdm, scripts
can be put in /etc/gdm/*/. Also see gdm.conf for ways you can customize
how it starts up the xserver.
Can you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log[.old] from a failed boot
up?

Often screenshots don't work for these sorts of errors; if you have a camera, a
digital photo can do just as well.
