I think I have a very similar problem. I have an ancient HP Omnibook
6000 which I have just upgraded to xubuntu 11.10. It runs OK when on
mains but on battery with kernel 3.0.0-12 it goes into kernel panic
within 3 or 4 mouse clicks after login. If I boot on battery using
kernel 2.6.38-1

I have a dual monitor system (NVIDIA FX1100), running Kubuntu 10.10 with
the nouveau driver. I have an x-window on each monitor. The "primary"
monitor is the left one. After log-in, the first application started

Further to my previous entry, whilst looking through my box of computer
bits looking for something else, I came across an old wifi card an
RT2500. I removed my RT61 and inserted the RT2500. I now have no
problems with kernel freezes with ACPI on or off.
I am convinced that this is a bug in the RT6
I have the same problem on an HP Omnibook 6000 with an RT61 wifi running
xubuntu 10.10.
Some additional comments: starting on battery with the wifi modem router
off allows the laptop to start and for me to log-in. It goes into panic
when the modem router is turned on. Also, I can start on battery
