should have added that I'm using NVIDIA video card, not ATI, all the
configuration stuff is out-of-the-box Ubuntu 11.10 desktop version.

I believe I have the same symptoms. I do not have the error in my Xorg
log as Tony did.
Additional information:
1- error message dialog box pops up at startup: "could not apply the stored
configuration for monitors none of the selected modes were compatible with
the possible modes"
