I did more tests and I found that the bug doesn't occur if I set the
memory mode in BIOS to:
DDR2-667 instead of -800
It looks like the memory is bad but that's probably not true for the
following reasons:
-both the memory and the motherboard are spec'ed for DDR2-800
-the same memory
One other thing: it's still possible that there is a bug in Linux
exposed by this particular configuration.

However, the cause was a data dvd. When I ejected the data dvd, it
starts up just fine.

Repeated a fragment of my first message which was easy to miss among
all the automatically generated info:

When I try to play the same file using "mplayer" instead of "gmplayer",
everything works well.
The problem seems to lie only with "gmplayer".
Here is the console output of "mplayer" with exactly the same ".mkv" file :

Looking at the difference in the outputs above, it appears that "mplayer" used
the "xv" driver while "gmplayer" used the "ws" driver.

Here is the content of /etc/network/interfaces:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
nework 192.168.1.0

netmask 255.255.255.0

The problem appears on Ubuntu 10.04.
I also tested this in Ubuntu 11.04 on another computer with two
interfaces (eth0 and wlan0) and the same problem occurs.

RT2860 driver cannot be used with ad-hoc networks
This bug is still present in Ubuntu 10.04.
When trying to set the mode to ad-hoc with this command
iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
I get an error message:

Added: this is a new bug since saving to NTFS partitions from Firefox used to
work not long ago. Last I tested it was about 2 weeks ago.

Let me clarify something: even though Firefox shows the error message
above, it creates the file on the NTFS partition, but the file has 0
bytes size.
