Adding "-fno-stack-protector" to CFLAGS in the libmatthew Makefile and
rebuilding solved the problem for me. I'm no expert but here's my
theory: If you are using the Sun JDK, the java executable built by Sun
does not have stack protection enabled. So when the JVM tries to load
the libmatthew shared
I installed 185.18.14 (using the link provided by Bryce Harrington
above) and have observed scrolling problems in the OpenOffice Word
Processor when "Visual Effects" are set to "Normal" (the default
setting). Setting "Visual Effects" to "None" works around the problem.

Thanks for confirming, RĂ¼diger Kupper. I guess I may need to file a new
bug report for this. I wasn't sure since the new driver isn't part of an
official release yet.
Personally, I don't mind "None" mode (Compiz disabled) but I worry that
first-timers will be very turned off if they try Ubuntu (or
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday and immediately noticed
this problem. As Luke J Militello says, it is random. It will work for a
while after boot and at some point just stop working.

I just finished a clean install of 9.10 (new default
partitions...nothing retained from previous install) on a Toshiba
notebook with an old-school 120 GB parallel ATA drive (whatever you call
the drives that came before SATA) and 2 GB of RAM.
I ran the following commands:
openssl rand -out foo 62
OK, the bug is in kernel 2.6.32. Kosmic, er, Karmic Koala is 2.6.31. No
wonder I wasn't able to reproduce it.
